Education– Syracuse University, A.B., 1927, A.M., 1930; post-graduate work at the University of California, 1934-1937; University of Washington, Ph.D., 1947.    Taught English at the University of Utah, 1937-44; at the University of Chicago, 1947-48; at Auburn University, 1948-1977;  Molly Hollifield Jones Professor of Humanities, 1966-77. Co-founder and Co-editor of Southern Humanities Review, 1966-1977.  Professor Emeritus at Auburn, 1977. Died April 4, 2004.
