Biography;

Geologist.  Born– September 18, 1863, Portville, N. Y.  Parents– William and Eliza Jane (Southworth) Butts.  Married Mellye Arledge, November, 1903 (died 1907).  Married Ella Virginia Rickles Pearson, November 30, 1909.  Education–Alfred University, B.S., 1899; M.S., 1900; University of Alabama, D. Sc., 1927.  Employed by the United States Geological Survey, 1901-1933; by the Virginia Geological Survey, 1933-46.  An authority on the Paleozoic Formations of the Appalachian Valley.
