Y.  Parents– William and Eliza Jane (Southworth) Butts.  Married Mellye Arledge, November, 1902 (died 1907).  Married Ella Virginia Rickles Pearson, November 30, 1909.  Education–Alfred University, B.S., 1899; M.S., 1900.  Employed by the United States Geological Survey, 1901-1933; by the Virginia Geological Survey, 1933-46.  An authority on the Paleozoic Formations of the Appalachian Valley. Honorary D. Sc., University of Alabama, 1927.  Died October 4, 1946.
