Education&#8211; Birmingham Southern College, B.A., 1955; University of Alabama, M.A., 1956; University of North Carolina, Ph.D., 1965. Taught at Snead State Junior College, 1956-1959; Fulbright scholar in France, 1959-1961, served on the faculty of the University of Caen, 1960-1961; and taught at the University of North Carolina, 1963-1965; taught French at the University of Alabama, 1965-1990. Received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, 1971. Member Modern Language Association, American Association of Teachers of French; Alabama Association of Foreign Language Teachers;\u00a0 associate editor of <em>South Atlantic Bulletin <\/em>and <em>Oeurves et Critiques. <\/em>An avid collector of Southern and folk art and a supporter of many artists;\u00a0 operated the Robert Cargo Folk Art Gallery in Tuscaloosa, 1984-2004.\u00a0 Accumulated an extensive collection of African-American quilts,\u00a0now held\u00a0by\u00a0the International Quilt Study Center in Nebraska and the Birmingham Public Library.
