Professor of chemistry at Leonard Medical School, 1886-1897; assistant chemist at the North Carolina Agriculture Experiment Station; state chemist and director of the North Carolina Agriculture Experiment Station; president of Southern Chemical Company in Winston, N.C.; Southern Cotton Oil Company in Savannah, Ga., and Montgomery, Ala., 1902-1906; president of the Battle Laboratory Corporation, 1906-1929.
