Parents&#8211;William Lafayette and Martha Toland Black.\u00a0 Married&#8211;Josephine Foster, 1921.\u00a0 Children&#8211;three.\u00a0 Married&#8211;Elizabeth Demeritte, 1957.\u00a0 Education&#8211; attended Birmingham Medical School for one year; attended the University of Alabama Law School, LL. B., 1906. Practiced law in Ashland, 1906-07;\u00a0 in Birmingham, 1907-1914; elected solicitor (prosecuting attorney) in Birmingham 1914; served until 1917.\u00a0 Served in the U.S. Army, 1917-1918; attained the rank of captain.\u00a0 Returned to law practice in 1918; elected to the U.S. Senate in 1926, re-elected in 1937.\u00a0 A strong supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal.\u00a0 Appointed to the U.S.Supreme Court in 1936\u00a0 by Roosevelt; served until his resignation in 1971.\u00a0\u00a0At the time of his retirement, second\u00a0longest serving Justice. Regarded as one of the most important Justices.\u00a0 Member Civitan Club and Knights of Pythias. Widely honored; pictured on one of the Great Americans Series of Postage stamps issued by the U.S.Postal Service.\u00a0 The Hugo L. Black United State Courthouse in Birmingham is named in his honor.\u00a0The University of Alabama in Birmingham established the Hugo L.
