Education–University of Alabama, B.A., 1953.\u00a0\u00a0 Staff member New York Times, 1953-65 \u00a0(began as copy boy and became reporter).\u00a0 Free lance writer after 1965.\u00a0 Wrote for Esquire and other journals. Pioneer of the “new journalism”:\u00a0 applied the techniques of fiction to non-fiction writing. Member PEN; Authors League of America; National Italian American Foundation.\u00a0 Best Sports Stories Award from E.P.Dutton, 1967; Christopher Book Award, 1970; Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Journalism, 2011.<\/p>\n
