Historian; university professor; administrator.\u00a0 Born–April 24, 1935, Birmingham.\u00a0 Parents– Jack and Lena Margaret Jones Rawls.\u00a0 Married– George Arthur Atkins, June 7, 1954.\u00a0 Children– four.\u00a0 Education; Birmingham schools;\u00a0 Auburn University, B. A., 1956; M.A., 1960; Ph. D., 1974.\u00a0 Taught history at Auburn, 1960-69; at UAB; at\u00a0Samford until 1985.\u00a0 Director of the Center for Arts and Humanities at Auburn, 1985-1995.\u00a0 Published widely in history journals, especially about the history of Alabama. \u00a0Consultant for many libraries, literary and historical groups.\u00a0 A world champion water skier;\u00a0 first woman inducted into the Alabama\u00a0Sports Hall of Fame, 1976.\u00a0 Member of Alabama Historical Association; Friends of Alabama Archives.\u00a0Board member of the Alabama Archives and History Foundation. \u00a0Inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor, 2007. Received the James Sulzby Award for the best book on Alabama history, for Developed for the Service of\u00a0 Alabama, <\/em>and for Alabama:\u00a0 The History of a Deep South State,\u00a0 <\/em>which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.<\/p>\n
