Broke engagement to James Spaulding, publisher of the New York World, because of her sympathies with Confederacy.\u00a0 Worked as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War; founded Camp Beulah, a hospital in Mobile..  Wrote<em> Macaria<\/em> to raise morale of Confederate soldiers; banned among one Northern general&#8217;s troops.
