Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Received the Lillian Smith Book Award for Best Southern Fiction in 1988 for <em>The Avenue:\u00a0 Clayton City, <\/em> and the Alice B. Young Award from the International Black Writers in 1989. Awarded professor emeritus status on his retirement at Duke, 1993.
