Employed by Oakland College, Mississippi, 1860-1861; Served in the Confederate Army as private, captain, lieutenant colonel, 1861-1865. Professor of geology,University of Mississippi, 1866-1874; Mississippi, state geologist, 1870-1874; Georgia, state geologist, 1874-1881; Chattanooga, Tenn., 1889-1892; Tuscaloosa, druggist, 1892-1902; geological reporter for Geological Survey of Alabama, 1903-1918. Awarded the honorary LL.
