Born&#8211; November 11, 1869, Wilson County, Tenn. Parents&#8211; Joseph Franklin and Nancy (Sherrill) Huddleston. Married&#8211; Bertha Baxley, November 29, 1917. Children&#8211; Five. Education&#8211; Cumberland University, L.L.B., 1891. Practiced law in Birmingham, 1891-1913; served as private in Co. K, 1st Alabama Regiment during the Spanish American War; alderman in Birmingham, 1910; U.S. Congressman, 1915-1937.\u00a0 Advocated generally progressive policies:\u00a0supported the home building bill that was the predecessor of the Federal Home Loan Act; sponsored a public works bill embodying the principles of the Public Works Act of 1933; sponsored a bill for the relief of destitute citizens. First commander of the Alabama Veterans of the Spanish American War, 1899-1900. Authored poems appearing in several newspapers and periodicals. Birmingham-Southern College established the George and Bertha Huddleston Scholarship in his honor.
