Practiced law in Jackson, Miss., 1903-1911; special agent, U.S. Department of Commerce to Latin America, 1914-1917; specialist and editor, Federal Board of Vocational Education, Washington, 1918-1919; commissioner, U.S. Department of Commerce,, 1919-1920; associate editor, Birmingham News, 1920-27. Worked in various positions for other Southern newspapers.
