Once your audio source (cassette, reel-to-reel tape, etc.) has been tested for playback, you can digitize the audio in Sound Forge.
 
 
 
# Open the Sound Forge 9.0 software under the Windows Start menu.
 
# Under FILE select "New".
 
# When the dialog box appears (shown below), select the settings provided by the Project Manager. For example:
 
#* sample rate = 96,000
 
#* bit depth = 24 bit
 
#* channels* = 1 (Mono)
 
#* ''note:'' you'll need to select stereo for stereo recordings if you want a stereo digital recording.# Select "OK" to accept the settings.
 
# A workspace appears which you should Maximize by selecting the blue Maximize button.
 
#  Select the Record feature. A dialog box appears.
 
# Begin playback of your audio source and make sure the sound levels are compliant with those specified by the Project Manager. Listen for a few minutes to account for various levels of volumes that may occur from the audio source.
 
# Stop and rewind the audio source to the beginning. Do not begin playback.
 
# Begin recording in Sound Forge by clicking the red Record button within the dialog box . 
 
# Begin playback of the audio source.
 
# After the audio source finishes playback, select the Stop button.
 
# Close the record dialog box by selecting the Close button.
 
# The digital waveform of the recording will appear in the workspace as below. Save the file w/ the appropriate name.
 
# Delete dead space before and after the audio source started and stopped, respectively, and other dead spaces such as cassette flips between sides A and B, etc.).  To do this:
 
#* Select the unwanted segment by holding down the right button of the mouse (1) and dragging with the mouse (2) until you highlight the entire unwanted segment. 
 
#* Keep in mind to only delete dead space created by the digitization process. Do not delete pauses and moments of silence native to the audio source. Check w/ the Project Manager for clarification regarding preservation of the integrity of the audio source.
 
# From the EDIT menu, select Delete.  The unwanted segment will no longer appear on the timeline.
 
# Repeat steps 14 through 15 until all unwanted segments are deleted.
 
# At this point you may decide that the audio levels are still not within the desired range. If so:
 
#* Go to the EDIT menu and choose Select All to select the entire wave.
 
#* From the PROCESS menu, select Volume.  A dialog box will appear.
 
#* Choose the desired level of adjustment by sliding the level up or down with the mouse. Use the up/down arrow keys for finer adjustments.
 
# Select OK from the Volume dialog and Sound Forge will alter the gain level for the entire clip.
 
# If the result is still too low or too high select UNDO VOLUME from the EDIT menu and repeat step 17 with a different setting than before.
 
# Once the desired level has been reached, SAVE your work.
