  1. Open Epson Scan under the Applications tab. -- It is a good idea to click and drag Epson Scan to to the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, so that you can easily access it in the future.
    1. Be sure to scan sheet music with the following settings in Epson Scan (once you set each of the tabs, your settings should be saved, but always check after you login):
      1. Mode: Professional Mode
      2. Document Type: Reflective
      3. Document Source: Document Table
      4. Auto Exposure Type: Photo
      5. Image Type: 24-bit Color
      6. Resolution: 600 dpi
      7. Adjustments: None of the tabs listed should be checked (Unsharp Mask, Descreening, Color Restoration, Backlight Correction, and Dust Removal). Uncheck them if they are checked.
      8. Configuration Tab: Click on "No Color Correction"
  2. Open the Sorted Sheet Music excel file:
    1. Click on Share Drive
    2. Click on Digital Projects
    3. Click on Digital Coll-in progress
    4. Click on u0004_Sheet_Music
    5. Click on SheetMusic-Metadata
    6. Click on sheet_music_sorted.xlsx
      1. Once open, the Sorted Sheet Music excel file can be left open for the duration of the scanning (unlike Tracking Files).
      2. You will add file names (in column C) and note how many pages were scanned (in column K) for each piece of music you complete. The file name is always the next number in line, even if that piece of music is missing from the box. If a piece of music is missing, type in the file name (SM0436, for example) and under Notes in column K, type SM0436 NOT FOUND IN BOX.
      3. Be sure to save your additions to the file.
  3. Scanning Sheet Music
    1. Before scanning a piece of sheet music, compare the title, composer, and call number to the Sorted Sheet Music excel file. (The call number is especially important! It must be identical to the entry in the excel file.)
    2. Scan each page of sheet music in order. Epson Scan numbers them in order of how you scan them, so this is very important.
    3. Wearing gloves, remove the sheet music from its plastic cover and place in the middle of the flatbed scanner.
    4. Under Epson Scan, click the Preview button.
    5. Once the preview is finished, create a border around the image by clicking and dragging the mouse. Be sure to leave extra space on all sides of the image, because you will need this space in Adobe Photoshop later. This marquee border can be moved or made smaller or larger for each subsequent image. (This border is very important because it cuts down on the scanning time. If the scanner scans the entire flatbed, the process takes much longer.)
    6. After previewing the image and setting the border, click Scan. A box called File Save Settings will open. You will have to create a new folder for each piece of sheet music you scan.
      1. Under Location:
        1. Click on Other, then click on the Choose... tab.
        2. Click on 500 GB Storage.
        3. Click on Sheet Music.
        4. Click on the New Folder tab. Type in the name of the new folder (this is the same name as the file name you entered in the Sorted Sheet Music excel file).
        5. Click on the blue Create tab.
        6. Click on the blue Choose tab.
      2. Under File Name:
        1. Prefix: Change this to the name you created for the new folder under Location.
        2. Start Number: Change this to 001. (You will only have to change the starting number for the first page of each sheet music file you scan. The program will automatically change the number for each subsequent page within a file.)
      3. Under Image Format:
        1. Type: TIFF (*.tif) -- There are other tiff types, so be careful not to choose another.
        2. Check Show this dialog box before next scan and Open image folder after scanning. Uncheck Overwrite any files with the same name to avoid making a mistake and overwriting other files.
      4. Click OK.
    7. The image usually takes about 3 minutes to scan.
    8. When the scan is complete, the folder and image will open in a new window.
  4. Optimize the scanned sheet music.
    1. Open Adobe Photoshop CS3 under the Applications tab. -- Like you did with Epson Scan, it is a good idea to click on Adobe Photoshop and drag it to the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. This way you can easily click and drag files to Adobe Photoshop for optimization.
    2. Click on the new image you have created and drag it to the Adobe Photoshop application.
    3. The image will open in Adobe Photoshop.
    4. The Actions in the upper right corner should consist of the following buttons -- Rotate 90 CCW, Rotate 90 CW, Align Edges, and Add Pica Border. These actions can be accessed by:
      1. Clicking on Load Actions
      2. Clicking on Share Drive
      3. Clicking on Digital Projects
      4. Clicking on Digital-Coll in progress
      5. Clicking on u0004_Sheet_Music
      6. Double-clicking on Sheet Music Processing.atn
    5. Once the correct actions are loaded and in Button Mode, click on either Rotate 90 CCW or Rotate 90 CW depending on whether the image needs to be rotated counter-clockwise or clockwise.
    6. Then click the lower right corner of the image window and expand the window until there is empty gray space on both sides of the image.
    7. Click on Align Edges.
      1. Only click in the gray areas to align the image! If you click on the image itself, you will distort the image.
      2. Click and hold down the mouse button in the gray area and move the mouse until the image is aligned.
      3. Once the image is aligned, press enter.
    8. Create a marquee border around the image.
      1. A cross will appear once Photoshop has finished aligning the image.
      2. Place the cross in the upper left corner of the image and click and drag, so that you create a marquee border around the image. Unlike Epson Scan, this marquee border should be directly against the image, outlining it without extra white space. This is because the Pica Border creates an extra border, so that step is done for you.
      3. The sheet music pages are often damaged or worn, so just try to get the entire image within the border.
      4. Once you have created the border, click Add Pica Border. It will take a moment for the image to save.
    9. When you become comfortable with this process, it is best to scan one image while optimizing another. Because the scanning process takes so long, this will save time.
  5. Record your work in the Tracking Files excel file.
    1. Click on Share Drive
    2. Click on Digital Projects
    3. Click on Organization
    4. Click on Digital Program Logs
    5. Double-click on TrackingFiles.xlsx
    6. Click on the SheetMusicwadehall worksheet tab at the bottom
      1. List the File Name in column A, how many pages were scanned in column D, and the date you completed the scanning in column E.
      2. Save and close Tracking Files, so that others can access and enter their information.
