Finding content in web directories
Uploaded MODS and derivatives created for web access (such as mp3, jpg, and such) can be found by using the filename.
Use the base URL: http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/content/
Then add on segments of the file name, substituting a forward slash for each underscore. Thus, for u0003_0000252_0000001_0002 (page 2 of the first letter in the Cabaniss MSS 0252 manuscript collection), you would want to use u0003/0000252/0000001/0002 to create this link: http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/content/u0003/0000252/0000001/0002
If this directory does not exist, no metadata or derivatives exist yet online for delivery. If there is metadata, it will be in the Metadata directory at this level. If there are derivatives, they are listed here. Three versions are currently made of each image. The one ending in _128.jpg is the thumbnail; the one ending in _512.jpg is the midsized default for web delivery; the one ending in _2048 is the largest one we currently deliver online. Each of these numbers corresponds to the pixel size on the longest side.
Finding content in Acumen
Uploaded content must be indexed before it is viewable in Acumen.
Once it is indexed, use the base URL: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/
Then add on the file identifier, without the extension. If you only want to see everything that is available from a holding area, use the first set of numbers in the identifier. Examples:
- Image collections, u0001: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0001
- Text collections, u0002: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0002
- Manuscript collections, u0003: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0003
- Sheet music collections, u0004: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0004
- Audio collections, u0008: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0008
- University of Alabama Research collections, u0015: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0015
- Patron image collections, p0001: http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/p0001
If you want to see only what is in a specific collection, use that collection identifier: for example, for Wade Hall Sheet Music (u0004_0000002), use the link http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0004_0000002
If you want to see a specific item, use the item identifier. For example, for a photo of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library in 1925, u0001_1831001_0000006, use http://acumen.lib.ua.edu/u0001_1831001_0000006
If you add on ".xml" and then "view source" with your browser, you will see the XML metadata that underlies the display.
Finding content in LOCKSS [] web directories
You can only access LOCKSS if your IP address has been approved for access; this is secure content that our ADPNet [] LOCKSS partners copy to help ensure us against disaster.
Uploaded archival files, documentation and metadata can be found by using the file name. In addition, what has been linked for LOCKSS copying can be found by browsing the manifests. Not all the content here is linked for LOCKSS; in particular, the most recent version of the metadata does NOT have a version number, and is constantly overwritten whenever the metadata is remediated. However, another copy has a version number attached, and that copy is linked into the manifest. Also, some documentation specific to our needs is NOT linked.
To find content by the file name:
Use the base URL: http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/lockss/
Then add on segments of the file name, substituting a forward slash for each underscore. Thus, for u0003_0000252_0000001_0002 (page 2 of the first letter in the Cabaniss MSS 0252 manuscript collection), you would want to use u0003/0000252/0000001/0002 to create this link: http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/lockss/u0003/0000252/0000001/0002
If this directory does not exist, no archival file yet exists in the archive by this name. Metadata may only be available via the collection-level spreadsheet.
To find the content by browsing the manifests:
Begin at http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/lockss/Manifest.html Here you will see a list of the different holders (several of which were referred to above, such as Hoole Manuscripts, Patron Images, etc.). Each has a link to another manifest. Each of the holder manifests links to collection-level manifests. The latter contain links to all LOCKSS archival content for web crawling.
For example, the manifest for the Tom Birdsong collection MSS 0159, u0003_0000159, look here: http://libcontent.lib.ua.edu/lockss/u0003/0000159/Documentation/Manifest.html
Except for the top level, all manifests are located in the Documentation directory of the level to which they apply. All are named Manifest.html.
