Note: The following information is derived from the University Libraries Emergency Operations Plan (accessible to DS staff in paper form or through the UA Libraries Intranet), as of May 2013, and should be updated as needed. Exception: All personal phone numbers provided in the handout must be omitted from the Wiki.

Building Emergency Coordinator (BEC) for Hoole: Mary Bess Paluzzi, office phone 8-0513

Building Emergency Coordinator Alternate (BECA) for Hoole: Donnelly Walton, office phone 8-0505

Designated Assembly and Refuge Locations for Hoole Personnel

  • Fire: Lloyd Hall, 1st floor
  • Bomb Threat: Denny Chimes
  • Backup: Gorgas Library, 2nd floor, Pearce Foyer
  • Tornado: Mary Harmon Bryant, 1st floor restroom hallway

  • Immediately report accidents to UAPD at 8-5454.
  • Inform the BEC/BECA if possible
  • Complete an incident report (available on the Intranet)

Active Shooter

From a safe location, immediately notify UAPD at 348-5454. When you call UAPD, remain calm and provide your present building location and specific room number, if applicable. Provide a complete description of the suspect(s) including any observed weapons and suspect’s last known location. Provide the location of any injured victims. Stay on the phone with the UAPD communications operator until the operator advises that you are no longer needed.

  • Evacuate--If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises.
  • Hide out--If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you.
  • Take action--As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter

Bomb Threat

Bomb threats are usually received by telephone. If you receive a bomb threat by telephone, try to keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Remain calm and obtain as much information as possible. NEVER HANG UP THE PHONE: In the event the caller hangs up on you, place the phone on the desk in order to keep the line open for tracing purposes.

If you receive a written bomb threat, stop handling the piece of correspondence immediately. Call UAPD at 348-5454 and follow their instructions.

If notified to evacuate, go to the designated assembly location

  • Primary: Denny Chimes
  • Backup: Gorgas Library, 2nd floor, Pearce Foyer

Civil Disturbance or Criminal Behavior

  1. Notify UAPD at 8-5454.
  2. When the incident is under control, complete an incident report (available on the Intranet)

  • Watch for falling object, stay away from glass, and get under furniture or in a strong doorway
  • If possible, exit the building
  • Contact the BEC/BECA to update him/her on your condition

  • If alarm is not sounding but you see a fire, activate the nearest pull station
  • When alarm sounds, exit the building
  • Go to the designated assembly location
    • Lloyd Hall, first floor
    • Gorgas Library, second floor, Pearce Foyer
  • Do not return to the building until given an "all clear" from UAPD

Hazardous Materials Release

  • When there is a significant release, contact EHS at 348-5905 to report the release.
  • Evacuate the area and restrict access until EHS or UAPD arrive.
  • Contact the BEC/BECA.
  • If a release is potentially toxic or harmful and an area or building must be evacuated, activate the fire alarm system.
  • Once safely outside, contact UAPD at 348-5454 and provide additional information for emergency responders.
  • If fire alarm is activated, UAPD/TFRS/EHS will coordinate the cleaning and restoration of the area.
  • Follow departmental and/or college plans.
