Audio Digitization:

Folder Set-up:

  • Admin: Collection XML
Log file
  • Metadata: Metadata.m02
  • Scans

Capture:

  • Turn on Fostex machine
  • Make sure USB cable is unplugged from computer
  • Insert memory card
  • The FR-2LE is equipped with a CompactFlashTM card slot which accepts a Type 2 CompactFlashTM card.
  • Press the red record button on the front of the Fostex machine.
  • Play the reel/tape immediately after.
  • When reel/tape is finished playing stop the tape and press the stop button on the Fostex
  • To transfer Audio files from fostex to computer put the fostex in USB mode and plug USB cord into the computer.
  • Digitize reels into master wav files on local computer; make extra copy on external hard drive.

Metadata

  • Create Metadata according to the input guideline standards. Also whenever possible make a description for the wave file since users cannot glance at a wave file to get context.
  • For wav file with tracks or multiple reels for the same performance do the following:
    • Make an overarching line of metadata for the item.
      • This should contain all required fields
    • ClipBegin should be left blank
    • ClipEnd should contain the duration of the entire item including the sum of all its parts
    • Tracks should be noted by making them page level (ex._0001).
    • Each track should have the wav file it cam from in the Source Audio file field and end with the extension ".wav"
      • The overarching item should leave this field blank.

Optimization:

  • Use Sound Forge to optimize master wav files; upload copy of optimized files to share drive.
  • Crop .wav file to get rid of excess silence at beginning and end
  • Adjust volume level Process -> Normalize
  • Remove non-native silence
  • Leave (or create if needed) 2 seconds of leading silence before each track

QC:

  • Compare Metadata with audio file content
  • Check Clip Begin and Clip End times with audio files

MODS:

  • Create MODS using makeMods.pl
  • Create LOG file by including Filename and removing the following fields and place in LOG file:
    • Filename
    • Title
    • Format
    • ClipBegin
    • ClipEnd
    • Region Condition
    • Stream 1 Condition
    • Stream 2 Condition
    • Stream 3 Condition
    • Stream 4 Condition
    • PriorStreams
    • EndingStreams
    • direction
    • Label
    • Speed Correction
If the intellectual division of the content is different from file division
  (ex: file.1.wav, file.2.wav, file.3.wav comprise a performance with 15
intellectual segments, then add another column here "Original Wave" with
the wave file name from which this segment was drawn. Remember the segments
continue through the item incrementally (incremental page numbers) despite
the item coming from 3 different files.
    • Captured by
    • Date
    • DS Notes
  • Place LOG text file in Admin Folder
  • Create Tab-delimited text Metadata file using ExcelConverter

ADLs/AES:

  • Run makeFits located in /home/ds/AUDIO/scripts
  • Run makeADLs.pl located in S:\Digital Projects\Administrative\scripts\audio
    • It requires exported tab-delimitated Metadata text file
  • Run fits2aes located on the server at /home/ds/AUDIO/scripts this requires FITS to be made first.

Prepare for Upload:

Folder Set-up:
  • Admin: Collection XML

  • After makeMods.pl delete the manifest and remove the excel spreadsheet from the folder

Upload:

  • Scripts are located here: /home/ds/AUDIO/scripts
  • Run audioToAcumen script which will create JPEGs (if we have transcripts) and QC's the MP3 files.
  • Run relocate_audio script to upload MP3s, JPEGs, and MODS into Acumen.
  • Run moveAudioContent script to archive master WAV files and MODS.
