An Audio Decision List (or ADL) indicates what portions of a WAV file should be extracted to create separate MP3 files for web delivery. Below is an example file, in which the WAV file (u0008_2012038_0000196.wav) is 1801 seconds long, and three segments are to be pulled from it to create MP3 files.

The first one, which will have the addendum "_0001" added to the identifier u0008_2012038_0000196 (the file name prior to ".adl.xml") is 438 seconds long (see "duration", starts at zero seconds into the WAV file, and is entititled "Medley: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Do You Hear What I Hear."
