Databases for Engineers
Engineering students should become familiar
with the databases listed below:
| Database |
Description |
| Compendex |
A comprehensive index
and abstracting source for engineering.
Indexes over 2,600 journals from
1884 to present, as well as conference
proceedings, technical reports,
patents, and standards. Access: UA, Remote. |
| INSPEC |
Major index to world's engineering
literature with emphasis on computer
science, electrical engineering,
physics, and infromation technology.
Produced by IEE (Institution of
Electrical Engineers). Coverage
1896 to the present. Access: UA,
Remote. |
IEEE
Xplore
|
Comprehensive collection of
IEEE (Institute for Electrical
and Electronics Engineers) and
IEE (Institution of
Electrical Engineers) periodicals,
conferences, and standards. Includes
superceded
IEEE standards but not draft standards.
Coverage: 1913 to present. Access: UA,
Remote. |
| ACM
Digital Library |
Bibliographic information, abstracts, reviews, and the full-text for articles
published in Association
for Computing Machinery (ACM)
periodicals and proceedings since 1947 are available in the Digital Library
together
with selected works published by affiliated organizations. |
Science Citation Index
Expanded database
on Web
of Science |
Citation searching made possible
because of a database made of source
journal citations and the references
in their bibliographies. Other
modes of searching including author
and keyword are also available.
Our coverage is 1985 to the present. Access: UA, Remote. |
| Applied
Science and Technology
Index |
Indexes over 300 English language
technology and engineering publications.
Coverage is from 1983 to the present.
Access: UA, Remote. |
| ENGnetBASE |
This
electronic database of over 200 CRC books and handbooks allows simultaneous
searching of titles which contain engineering information, including
data, facts, figures, graphs,
equations, illustrations, and charts.
1999 to the present. Access: UA,
Remote. |
| Knovel |
This electronic database allows
simultaneous searching of books
and handbooks which contain engineering
information, including data, facts,
figures, graphs, equations, illustrations,
and charts. |
| SciFinder
Scholar |
Academic subscription version
of comprehensive index, with
abstracts, to chemical and related
literature, including chemical
and biological engineering. Includes
citations to articles, book chapters,
conference proceedings, patents,
and more; as well as a chemical
substance database and a chemical
reaction database. It also includes
CHEMCATS, useful for locating
suppliers of a chemical. 1907-current. Access: On
computers in Rodgers Library,
UA faculty, staff, and students
may go directly to the the SciFinder
Scholar icon located on the computers'
desktops.
• UA
campus use requires
the installation of the SciFinder Scholar client software
on your campus computer. Access is not available from off campus. The SciFinder
Scholar Agreement Page has a link for UA faculty, staff, and students to
use for installing the software.

NTIS
|
The NTIS (National Technical
Information Service) bibliographic
database contains citations and
abstracts summaries of information
products, including technical reports
of U.S. government-sponsored research,
software packages, and data files.
Our coverage is from 1983 to present. Access: UA,
Remote. |

The Compendex database
is the largest engineering database. It's
broad subject coverage means
that it should give us references on almost
any engineering topic. Let's try a search
on DESIGN OF TIRES using the Compendex
database.
Keyword Searching With keywords TIRE and
DESIGN, we obtain a large number of references
many of which are the design of something
other than tires.
Subject Search 1. We can do an EI
subject term search in the
Compendex database,
using the controlled vocabulary terms.
We can obtain these terms by picking a
reference from our keyword search that
contains the kind of information we are
looking for, and determining the controlled
vocabulary subject terms that were assigned
to that reference. The EI Index term box
at the right can also be helpful in suggesting
controlled vocabulary; although it does
not seem to contain ALL of the controlled
vocabulary.
Notice when we do a controlled vocabulary
search in Basic Search, the words are searched
in the title, subject, and abstract field
only. Thus for our current search we receive
fewer references. In a large percentage of
the articles in is the design of the tires
that is the main point, but there are still
some cases where it is the design of the
car and the tires are part of it.
Subject Search 2. We can make the
search even more precise by switching to
Advanced Search where we can search only
in the Controlled Vocabulary words (not the
title words or abstract words).
(TIRES WN CV) and (DESIGN WN CV)
The Keyword Search (Words Anywhere) versus
the Words in Subject Search in the Applied
Science and Technology Index database gives
similar results to Compendex but on a smaller
scale.
Print, e-mail, or save search results
| The options for printing, emailing,
or saving your search results to disk
are available using Results Manager,
located at the bottom of the web page
at the end of your search results.
The Result
Set is the
records you wish
to display (and
then print, email,
or save). You
may choose
"Checked Results" after selecting individual records from your
list by clicking in the box to the left of the record and next to the number
of the record.

View & print full-text (if available)
Look for a space that reads "Full
text options" with a link to Electronic
Full-Text at the bottom of the Abstract/links
or Detailed/links record. This is linking
to electronic journals outside of the Compendex
database. Click on it to determine if UA
has access. If UA Libraries has purchased
the right to view the text, you may view
the article onscreen and print from the
screen.
