What is a library's catalog
?
On the Rodgers Library homepage under the full name of
the library are links to the tools the library provides.
CATALOG refers to the University Libraries' holdings
or list of books, journals, magazines, technical papers,
conferences, videos, CDs, maps, etc. The list is in a
spreadsheet format, like MS Excel. You can access the
information through a browser. There is one catalog,
or list of holdings for the entire library system, and
you can
access the
list through the homepage of each branch library.
Library of Congress Classification System
The University Library's holdings are cataloged using
the Library of Congress Classification System. Another
way of wording it is every item in the CATALOG has been
assigned a unique combination of numbers and letters that
is based on the subject of the item. This enables the
library to arrange books, journals, etc on shelves by
subject. Science and technology engineering are the major
classes of knowledge for books shelved in Rodgers Library.
The LC classifications are Q and T, respectively. For
more about the LC Classification System click
here.
Collections

Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering.. The following
describes some of the different
collections and where they are located in Rodgers' floor

area for six months to a year. Afterwards
issues
for each title are bound together into volumes
and shelved on the second floor. this is
indicated by location "Science & Engineering
Library Periodicals" in the catalog. Older
years of bound periodicals are kept in the
Annex. Rodgers Library also receives many
periodicals in
electronic

NOT ALL OF THE LIBRARY'S HOLDINGS ARE CLASSIFIED USING
LC CLASSIFICATION. The University Library is a depository
for documents published by the federal government. These
documents are generally shelved in the Government Documents
area of Gorgas Library, but some publications (especially
NASA) can be found in Rodgers Library in Reference. The
federal government has developed a scheme of classification
called the Superintendent of Documents Classification
System or SuDocs. To learn more about this system click
here. |
