The Gorgas Library building also houses offices for central library functions such as acquisitions, catalog, interlibrary loans, and systems.
As The University of Alabama's principal locus of information services, University Libraries strives for excellence in advancing the University's teaching, research, and outreach programs by anticipating information needs, providing access to resources, and promoting effective use of information by students, faculty, and staff.
In addition to offering services such as interlibrary loan, library instruction, circulation, course reserve, and reference and information services, University Libraries electronically links researchers to an wide array of databases  (including full-text) as well as electronic journals , and subject guides. 
Books, serials, and non-book materials in the collections may be identified through the Libraries' catalog . The University of Alabama is a regional depository for U.S. government information .

Other Libraries on Campus
Also on campus but under different administration are the Bounds Law Library  (Bryant Drive), the Health Sciences Library  (in DCH Regional Medical Center), and the Map Library  (in Farrah Hall on University Boulevard). Materials in the Health Sciences Library are included in the University Libraries' catalog; the Law Library's catalog, ATTICUS, may be accessed at www.atticus.law.edu . The library at the Paul W. Bryant Museum  is open to researchers and the public.
The combined collections of the libraries on campus number over 2 million volumes, more than 1 million government documents, 3.5 million microform units, and 275,000 maps. The University of Alabama libraries receive about 18,000 serials.
The University of Alabama is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Southeastern Library Network, and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries.
