Topic Modeling the "Great Unread"
With the recent dramatic increase in the number of digitized texts, humanists are being called upon to re-evaluate their approaches. With a sufficiently-large corpus, even a trained scholar will struggle with problems of incomplete metadata and subject opacity. The discipline of Computer Science encourages us to move beyond the Keyword Search model, towards algorithms that enable data to "organize itself." What then is the relevance, in this new world, of the training and experience that literary scholars possess? How can literary "domain expertise" complement algorithmic approaches to text mining?
Peter Leonard is Librarian for Digital Humanities Research at Yale University Library. His recent work as Principal Investigator of a Google Digital Humanities Grant has focused on Topic Modeling as a technique for exposing hidden structure in the Nordic-language volumes in Google Books. "Absolutely the Most Important Thing You Know Nothing About: Shorthand and Civilization in the 17th- Century England"
Lecture by Dr. Michael Mendle
Isaac Newton the mathematician, John Locke the philosopher, Samuel Pepys the navy official and diarist, and Roger Williams the great apologist for religious liberty had something in common—they were all shorthand adepts. An information technology for the clever and “geeky,” stenography emerged with astonishing rapidity in 17
th-cenury England, well before parallel developments elsewhere. First seen as an aid to Puritan piety, shorthand’s possibilities were soon grasped by ambitious and creative people seeking to make points and profits. By mid-century it had become essential to news-gathering, by the end it transformed law and public culture, redefining the normal expectation of public memory.

Guest Speaker Beverly Semmes
Sponsored by: Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, Art Department
Beverly Semmes is an internationally acclaimed artist who creates environments of lush textiles and accompanying materials. Organized by the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, the exhibition features glass and clay vessels with oversized garments. Patterson Sims writes in the accompanying catalog: “They are costumes in search of their characters, patiently seeking and awaiting women—or maybe men, children, or a culture—big enough to wear them.” The vessels’ freeform and coarse features contrast with the smoothness of the fabric. Semmes is the recipient of many awards and grants: among them an NEA Fellowship (1994-95), a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (1997) and an award from the Art Critics International Association (2001). Her work is in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Semmes lives in New York City and teaches at NYU and Pratt Institute.

"The Promise and Perils of Doing History in the Digital Age"
Description: What will become of the humanities in the Age of Google? Andrew Torget will talk about the unprecedented challenges and opportunities that face historians in the twenty-first century. Tracing the evolution of the digital humanities over the past two decades, Torget will explore how new research methods (such as geospatial analysis and text-mining) are creating a quiet revolution among historians, and what that could mean for how we understand the past.
Andrew J. Torget is a historian of nineteenth-century North America at the University of North Texas, where he directs the Digital History Lab. The founder and director of numerous digital humanities projects -- including Mapping Texts, Texas Slavery Project, Voting America, and the History Engine -- Andrew served as co-editor of the Valley of the Shadow project, and as the founding director of the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond. The co-editor of several books on the American Civil War, Andrew has been a featured speaker on the digital humanities at Harvard, Stanford, Rice, and the National Archives in Washington, D. C. In 2011, he was named the inaugural David J. Weber Research Fellow at the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University. He is currently completing a book titled Cotton Empire: Slavery, the Texas Borderlands, and the Origins of the U.S.-Mexico War.

Intellectual Property in the Academy
Workshop
This workshop examines the basic contours of copyright law as it applies in scholarly communication. What is intellectual property, what is the public domain, and how does fair use apply? What should be in a request when permission is needed, and what is worth negotiating for? Finally, what rights do scholars have as creators of intellectual property and how can those rights be exercised?

Accessibility in Digital Humanities
Brown Bag Lunch
How can we broaden our understanding of the ways that people use digital resources by considering the experiences of users with disabilities? In this brown bag, we will discuss contemporary DH conversation about "access," strategies for widening this access in our own projects, and issues, such as heavy reliance on visualization, that exclude some users from working with particular digital tools and resources.

"Body Doubles: the aspirations of a multiplayer Macbeth in contemporary South Korea"
A presentation on intersections between performance, virtuality, Shakespeare and contemporary Korean culture by Sam Trubridge
Director of Playground NZ Theater Company and Lecturer, Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand
This research examines the phenomena of the PC Bang (internet cafe) in contemporary South Korean culture, where profound distances between the physical and the virtual are produced. A performance interpretation of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' is developed for this environment using the gaming platform as a stage, enabling a dialogue to occur between fictional idealised bodies and the domestic equivalents.
Sam Trubridge is a director and performance designer with The Playground NZ, having directed 'The Restaurant of Many Orders' (UK, NZ, Italy), 'Sleep/Wake' (The Auckland Festival 2009, NZ), and a new work 'Ecology in Fifths'. He is also artistic director for The Performance Arcade, an annual event on Wellington Waterfront, NZ. Trubridge is the Oceanic editor for the 'World Scenography' publication, and has been published in various other books and journals worldwide, including 'Behind the Scenes: contemporary set design' by Black Dog publishing. He has presented work, lectured, and exhibited across Oceania, Asia, The Americas, and Europe with his research in performance design, art/science collaboration and performance art.Â

November 7, 2012 at 5:30 pm: Joshua D. Rothman, associate professor of History at The University of Alabama will talk about his new book, Flush Times and Fever Dreams: A Story of Capitalism and Slavery in the Age of Jackson (UGA Press, 2012) A talk followed by Q&A and book signing.
I

n 1834 Virgil Stewart rode from western Tennessee to a territory known as the “Arkansas morass” in pursuit of John Murrell, a thief accused of stealing two slaves. Stewart’s adventure led to a sensational trial and a wildly popular published account that would ultimately help trigger widespread violence during the summer of 1835, when five men accused of being professional gamblers were hanged in Vicksburg, nearly a score of others implicated with a gang of supposed slave thieves were executed in plantation districts, and even those who tried to stop the bloodshed found themselves targeted as dangerous and subversive. Using Stewart’s story as his point of entry, Joshua D. Rothman details why these events, which engulfed much of central and western Mississippi, came to pass. He also explains how the events revealed the fears, insecurities, and anxieties underpinning the cotton boom that made Mississippi the most seductive and exciting frontier in the Age of Jackson.
As investors, settlers, slaves, brigands, and fortune-hunters converged in what was then America’s Southwest, they created a tumultuous landscape that promised boundless opportunity and spectacular wealth. Predicated on ruthless competition, unsustainable debt, brutal exploitation, and speculative financial practices that looked a lot like gambling, this landscape also produced such profound disillusionment and conflict that it contained the seeds of its own potential destruction. Rothman sheds light on the intertwining of slavery and capitalism in the period leading up to the Panic of 1837, highlighting the deeply American impulses underpinning the evolution of the slave South and the dizzying yet unstable frenzy wrought by economic flush times. It is a story with lessons for our own day.

October 17, 2012 at 5:30 pm: Ralph Voss, retired professor of English at The University of Alabama will talk about his new book, Truman Capote and the Legacy of In Cold Blood (UA Press, 2011) A talk followed by Q&A and book signing.
Truman Capote and the Legacy of In Cold Blood is the anatomy of the origins of an American literary landmark and its legacy.
Ralph F. Voss was a high school junior in Plainville, Kansas in mid-November of 1959 when four members of the Herbert Clutter family were murdered in Holcomb, Kansas, by “four shotgun blasts that, all told, ended six human lives,” an unimaginable horror in a quiet farm community during the Eisenhower years. No one in Kansas or elsewhere could then have foreseen the emergence of Capote’s book–which has never gone out of print, has twice been made into a major motion picture, remains required reading in criminology, American Studies, sociology, and English classes, and has been the source of two recent biographical films.
Voss examines Capote and In Cold Blood from many perspectives, not only as the crowning achievement of Capote’s career, but also as a story in itself, focusing on Capote’s artfully composed text, his extravagant claims for it as reportage, and its larger status in American popular culture.
Voss argues that Capote’s publication of In Cold Blood in 1966 forever transcended his reputation as a first-rate stylist but second-rate writer of “Southern gothic” fiction; that In Cold Blood actually is a gothic novel, a sophisticated culmination of Capote’s artistic development and interest in lurid regionalism, but one that nonetheless eclipsed him both personally and artistically. He also explores Capote’s famous claim that he created a genre called the “non-fiction novel,” and its status as a foundational work of “true crime” writing as practiced by authors ranging from Tom Wolfe and Norman Mailer to James Ellroy, Joe McGinniss, and John Berendt.
Voss also examines Capote’s artful manipulation of the story’s facts and circumstances: his masking of crucial homoerotic elements to enhance its marketability; his need for the killers to remain alive long enough to get the story, and then his need for them to die so that he could complete it; and Capote’s style, his shaping of the narrative, and his selection of details–why it served him to include this and not that, and the effects of such choices—all despite confident declarations that “every word is true.”
Though it’s been nearly 50 years since the Clutter murders and far more gruesome crimes have been documented,
In Cold Blood continues to resonate deeply in popular culture. Beyond questions of artistic selection and claims of truth, beyond questions about capital punishment and Capote’s own post-publication dissolution,
In Cold Blood’s ongoing relevance stems, argues Voss, from its unmatched role as a touchstone for enduring issues of truth, exploitation, victimization, and the power of narrative.

October 10, 2012 at 9:45 am at Capstone Village , located at 601 5th Avenue East Tuscaloosa,
Delbert Reed will talk about his upcoming book on World War II and The University of Alabama.
A small exhibit of materials from the Hoole Library relating to the talk will be on display on the first floor of Capstone Village, including
an air mission jounral recently donated to the Hoole Library by Emmett Dendy. Mr. Dendy’s air mission journal and information about Ralph Krupp. Mr. Krupp was a US pilot shot down in August 1944 and held in a German POW camp near Nurnberg. In March 1944, Mr. Dendy flew a mission to bomb Nurnberg. Jim Gamble another US airman held in the Nurnberg camp, described the US bombing raid in his published memoirs, Innocents Abroad. Reed is the author of numerous books, including most recently,
When Winning Was Everything, a tribute to former Alabama football players who served in the military World War II. More than 325 former Crimson Tide players and coaches served during the war. They were in leadership positions and in every major battle. Some dropped behind enemy lines as paratroopers on D-Day; many were pilots in the European, Asian and Pacific theaters of war; scores were soldiers in the fields of France and Belgium, and others were Marines on Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Thirteen lost their lives in service to our country. Over 50 players are featured with stories and photos of their playing days at Alabama and their military days."

Q & A with Thornton Willis
Thornton Willis Exhibition
October 4 – November 16, 2012
The exhibit features a decade of large abstract oil paintings by New York artist and UA alumnus Thornton Willis. There are three bodies of work represented in this exhibition: Willis’s latest paintings, lattice paintings, and triangle paintings. Willis’s works have always had in common the “allover surface plane held in tension, between figure and ground, as an interwoven field”, says Lance Esplund, arts contributor to the Wall Street Journal. He writes of Willis’ latest work: “Willis’s restless geometries poke their long-necked heads upward and around, as if to hear a distant drumbeat or to see above the herd.” Joseph Masheck, Artforum, offers this comment: “The paintings may not resemble human likenesses, but they nevertheless seem somehow to proffer human character in the abstract.” Willis’s awards include a painting fellowship from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, painting and printmaking fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Fellowship, the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Painting Fellowship and membership in the 2004 Southern Mississippi College of Arts and Letters Wall of Fame. His work is in more than 40 collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY; The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; the Herb and Dorothy Vogel Collection, National Gallery, Washington, DC; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, UA, Tuscaloosa, AL.

Sarah Moody Gallery of Art
Guest Artist - Brian Novatny: Selected Paintings and Drawings
New York artist Brian Novatny brings figurative drawings and paintings to the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art. This exhibition shows the evolution of Novatny’s work over the last 17 or so years. This evolution is more of style than content. The appearance of the figures in Novatny’s work has changed significantly, from stylized to recognizable, familiar faces. Novatny’s figures are oddly preoccupied and disconnected from narrative, yet there are bits of narrative integrated into each drawing, whether a patterned fabric, a figure falling, or a June Allyson look-alike. There is also a feeling of unease in the work as if the figures are “trapped” in the background of the works. Novatny has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Seattle, Saint Louis, Berlin and Frankfurt and is represented by ADA Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. The artist will be lecturing on his work on Wednesday, September 5, in 205 Gorgas Library on the UA campus.

Chip Cooper - Lecture - Dance of the Photographer about his latest book,
Old Havana: Spirit of the Living City.
Old Havana: Spirit of the Living City artistically captures the architecture, people, and daily life of La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) through the lenses of two visionary photographers and colleagues, one American and the other Cuban.
Chip Cooper and Néstor Martí began collaborating in 2008, documenting the picturesque features of the oldest and most historically rich quarter in Cuba’s capital city at the behest of Eusebio Leal Spengler, the historian of the city of Havana and the director of the Habana Vieja restoration project. Author,
Julie Hedgepeth Williams, has just released her new book,
A Rare Titanic Family, about her great-uncle, Albert Caldwell, who survived the Titanic, along with his wife and baby.
Williams grew up hearing the story of the Titanic and how her family members survived the tragic 1912 shipwreck; one of the few families to survive intact. Williams was so inspired by Caldwell's story that she majored in History (and English) at Principia College, and eventually got a Master's and a PhD at University of Alabama, both with an emphasis on media history. She is the past president of the American Journalism Historians Association and teaches journalism part-time at Samford University in Birmingham. She has also taught media history at UA's own Master's in Community Journalism Program. She is married and has two teenage sons.
Check out the book's website at
https://sites.google.com/site/raretitanicfamily/ , or on Facebook at "A Rare Titanic Family."
The lecture, book signing and reception are free and open to the public.
