The mission of the W. S. Hoole Special Collections Library is to build and make accessible a permanent collection of research resources in all media documenting the unique historical and cultural experience of the state of Alabama, especially the University of Alabama, and the way in which that experience has influences and continues to influence the lives of it citizens. This collection exists primarily to support scholarly research in Alabama history and culture and to meet the curricular needs of the University of Alabama faculty and of the state's classroom teachers. The Hoole Library will accommodate other researchers insofar as resources permit.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES
In building its collections the Hoole Library will lay particular emphasis on
- broad cultural, economic, social and political studies of the state
- singular materials documenting regional and local history, especially of West Alabama
- Alabama's literary legacy and its influence on America
- Gulf Coast maritime history
- the University of Alabama and its alumni
The Hoole Library may also occasionally seek materials that support the University's Book Arts program or complement current collection strengths, including:
- Confederate imprints
- first editions of works by Sir Walter Scott
- first editions of works by Lafcadio Hearn
- works by and about Robinson Jeffers
- U.S. World War II Armed Services editions
The W. S. Hoole Library also holds and makes available to users materials which are determined by a library bibliographer or selector to support the curricular and research needs of the University and which meet one or more of the following criteria: published prior to 1825, valued at more than $300, held by five or fewer OCLC libraries, fragile physical condition.
