Come on, UA students -- Show us your stuff! The aim of the UA Libraries Studetn Book Collecting competition is to encourage reading and promote book collecting. Collections may be of any type and can be centered on a subject or field, a particular genre, or by a certain author, for example.Collections will be judged by creativity and content. The physical size, monetary value, or rarity of the collection will not be a major consideration.
For the purpose of this contest, the “book” is broadly defined and may include both paper and hardback books, digital materials such as music and video, 'zines, manga, comics, and other print materials. Contact if you have any specific questions.
Entries were due by 4:00 P.M. on Friday, October 5, 2007.
Prizes will be awarded on Friday, October 19 at 1 pm with a ceremony, reception, and lecture by UA Profesor of History, Dr. Maarten Ultee. Dr. Ultee
will speak about his own experiences as a book collector, book dealer and academic reader. His talk will also address the compulsion to collect. The talk is titled,
Tales of the Used Book Trade: A Former Book Dealer and Collector Discusses the Compulsion to Collection. A copy of the flier is available here.
An exhibit of winning student collections will be on display in the Gorgas Library first floor lobby.
