Locating Books for Alabama Education:

The University Libraries Catalog (library.ua.edu) provides call number and location of books in McLure Education Library, as well the Gorgas Main Library and the Business, Science and Health Libraries. Here are a few Library of Congress (LC) Subject Headings and Call Numbers to get your search started:

McLure Library also maintains the School Library Collection, containing fiction and non-fiction materials for children. Materials in this collection can be found by browsing the catalog for items with SCH.LIB. call number designation. These materials are located on the basement level of McLure Library.

Early Alabama Education Materials:

Materials regarding the early history of education in Alabama may be found in the Hoole Special Collections Library, on the 2nd floor of the Scientific Collections Building on Hackberry Lane. Check for library reading room hours.

Note on Locating Dissertations and Theses:

A sizable portion of research done on education in Alabama is found in doctoral dissertations and Master’s theses. The Education Library holds all dissertations and theses completed within the College of Education at the University. These maybe searched by author, title or subject.

All dissertations completed before 1978 carry a call number beginning with D 378. These items are shelved on the third floor of McLure Library, near the elevator.

All dissertations after 1978 carry the appropriate Library of Congress call number and are shelved in the general collection.

Dissertations completed at other institutions may be located by use of the Dissertations & Theses database. Dissertations & Theses at University of Alabama includes citations and abstracts for those done at UA in all departments. For the majority of titles after 1996, a preview of the first 24 pages is provided, as well as the full text, which can be downloaded for free by authorized University of Alabama users.

Supplementary Curriculum Materials:

Beyond materials listed in the Library Catalog, McLure Library also carries the Kraus Curriculum Development Library. This collection is available on microfiche and is located next to the ERIC microfiche on the basement level of McLure Library. The curriculum guides in this collection were selected at Annual meetings of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (www.ascd.org).
