The McLure Education Library is one of the sites for the State of Alabama’s textbook adoption period of public and professional review. Educators and the general public are encouraged to view textbooks for consideration. It is from this evaluation that the committees and the State Board of Education select titles to be included on the State Textbook Adoption list.
The main criterion for selection is how well the textbook matches the needs of the Alabama Course of Study for that subject. Topics are rotated every year in a six year cycle. This process allows the Education Library to have reasonably current textbooks for use by students in the College of Education. Since we are a public viewing site, we only receive the student editions of textbooks. We have been fortunate to have faculty and alumni serving on the state committees who have donated the teacher’s editions and workbooks, but we do not get them for every subject.
The textbooks may be found in two locations within the Education Library. Samples for the current year are found on the main level, to the left of the reference collection. These books are non-circulating and may not be removed from the library.
Circulating textbooks and supplemental materials from previous adoption years may be found in the Curriculum Materials Center in the basement of McLure. In the catalog, these items are given the location “Education Curriculum Materials.” These books are arranged by grade, and within each grade level, they are arranged by subject. Items may be checked out for 30 days by all patrons, and they are subject to recall when needed for a class. Fines are collected for late and lost books. Bring books back on time and avoid problems at the end of the term.
