Born in Connecticut, Langdon moved to Marion, Perry County, Alabama, with his brother in 1825. He moved to Mobile in 1834, where he was a commission merchant with Martin A. Lee. Edited the Advertiser, a Whig newspaper. Unsuccessful candidate for the legislature several times, he was elected mayor of the city of Mobile in 1849 and served, except one year until 1855. Served in the state legislature 1855-1856 and 1862, and was a member of the Alabama state constitutional conventions of 1865 and 1875. Unsuccessful candidate for governor 1872 and 1878. Served as Secretary of State of Alabama, 1885-1889. Langdon was interested in agriculture and served as a Trustee of Agriculture and Mechanical college at Auburn. Written to "Dear Brother" from Mobile, Alabama. Discusses his work in the nursery business, the selling of fruit trees, the expanding planting of grapes and his winery.
