5th September 1862---At 2:30 a.m. Brought to the chase by firing the port bow gun with blank cartridge she proved to be an American ship-- At early daylight hailed the ship and brought the Capt. And the ships papers on board she proved to be the ship Benjn Tucker showing U.S. Register on a whaling voyage we then made a prize of her and were engaged during the watch from 4 to 8 a.m. in receiving on board the prisoners and their baggage and various articles from the ship. From 8 to Meridian mustered the crew to quarters and fired the prize when we stood to the S. E. By order of Commander Semmes Lieut. J. M. Kell was appointed to value the ship Benj Tucker and appraised her including the cargo at eighteen thousand dollars also Lieuts Kell & Low were appointed to vlaue the Brig Altamaha & appraised her at three thousand dollars Lat at noon 40 [degrees] 34" N Long 34 [degrees] 09' W
