On December 21 the Alabama arrived at New Harbor, a short distance from the British colony of Singapore. They would spend two days here taking on coal and provisions. The Alabama's reputation was well known. When news of her arrival began to circulate among the natives, there were excited exclamations of "Kappal Hantu!" ("Ghost Ship"). On the 23rd visitors were allowed on board, and the Confederate officers, in dress uniform, proudly gave tours of their ship. Europeans and natives alike crowded aboard. It was a friendly crowd, and the Confederates were delighted with the good will and support they received.
