Program for Latin American and Hispanic Studies

Books

Libraries’ Catalog—lists books, electronic resources, journal titles, and government documents in the Gorgas Library as well as the Business,Education, Science & Engineering, and Health Sciences Libraries.

Anthropology Bibliography—available on CD-ROM at Gorgas Information Services, this is the cumulative cataloging of the Tozzer Library at Harvard University; contains catalog records for books, journals, and series, as well as maps and audiovisual materials. Tozzer is particularly strong in Mesoamerica, especially Mayan studies. Tozzer’s cataloging of the articles in most of its journals and many edited collections is available as Anthropological Literature (see below).

Articles, Etc.

Choose one of the electronic databases listed below to find articles. Then, simply go to the Libraries' Databases page(http://www.lib.ua.edu/databases/dbsearch.htm) and select the database you want. Many of the databases have full-text (FT=full-text)copies of articles. Others provide citations and abstracts.

Academic Search Elite—general database with popular news items as well as scholarly journals. FT

Anthropological Literature—an index to periodicals, journals, and edited works. Primary emphasis is given to the following fields: archaeology, anthropology (biological and physical, cultural and social), and linguistics.

Ethnic News Watch—entries from 80 ethnic newspapers and magazines published in the United States, including Hispanic, Latino, Chicano, etc. Some titles in Spanish language. FT

Historical Abstracts—contains citations for journal articles, book reviews, and dissertations from thousands of journals.

Informe! (Revistas en Español)—collection of Hispanic, many in Spanish language, magazines. Covers a wide range of topics such as business, health, culture, and technology. FT

JSTOR—contains full-text articles, book reviews, and other entries from 100+ scholarly titles. Subject coverage includes Anthropology,History, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, Mathematics, and many others. FT

Newspaper Source—provides indexes, abstracts, and full-text to hundreds of national and international newspapers. FT

PAIS International—indexes books, articles, government documents, and various forms of printed material from all over the world. Specific areas include public and social policy and other social sciences.

Anthropological Index Online [http://aio.anthropology.org.uk/cgi-bin/uncgi/search_bib_ai/anthind] —index to periodicals dating back to 1957 in the British Museum’s Anthropology Library.

Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS). [http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/]. The single most valuable resource for citations appearing in journals, as well as chapters in edited volumes, books, and some government documents. Useful scholarly annotations accompany citations. Essays for each discipline identify principal works and research trends. Topical and geographic subdivisions. Selective coverage based upon qualitative considerations. A project of the Hispanic Division, Library of Congress.

Internet Resources for Latin America [http://lib.nmsu.edu/subject/bord/laguia/]—hosted and maintained by New Mexico State University Library, this site contains links to many resources focusing on Latin America.

Latin American Election Statistics: A Guide to Sources [http://sshl.ucsd.edu/collections/las/]--provides some national-level results of presidential elections, congressional elections, and numbers of municipalities won by specific parties.

Latin American Resources [http://www.digital-librarian.com/latinamerican.html]–a Librarian's choice of the best internet resources focusing on Latin America.

Library of Congress Hispanic Reading Room [http://lcweb.loc.gov/rr/hispanic/]—site for The Hispanic Reading Room; provides valuable links to resources focusing on the Caribbean, Latin America, and Iberia.

Library of Congress Country Studies [http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/cshome.html]—contains the on-line version of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under Country Studies/Area Handbook program sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army.

Latin American Network Information Center (LANIC) [http://lanic.utexas.edu/]—offers links to informative sites dealing with a wide range of Latin American Topics. Users can search by country or subject.

The World Factbook [http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/]—published by the CIA, this resource contains maps and geographical information, social and economic data, government, communications, and military information on a country-by-country basis.

Cambridge History of Latin America (call numbers vary; search in the libraries catalog using Cambridge History of Latin America as title)—includes topical coverage, as well as volumes dedicated to single countries or regions.

Cambridge History of Latin American Literature (Gorgas Reference PQ7081 .A1 C35 1996)—presents Latin American Literature in historical context.

Concise Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature (PQ7081.A1 E56 2000)—a new version of Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature.

Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture (Gorgas Reference F1406 .E53 1996)—scholar-authored entries on people, places, events, and themes in Latin American history and culture.

Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature (Gorgas Reference PQ7801 .A1 E56 1997)—contains entries on writers, works, and topics related to Latin American literature.

Encyclopedia of Mexico: History, Society, & Culture (Gorgas Reference F1210 .E63 1997)—covers people, events, and themes related to Mexico. Contains 500+ scholar-authored entries which are multidisciplinary in scope.

Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS) (Gorgas Reference Z1605 .H23)—from the Library of Congress, this is the most complete citation database for publications about Latin America published in the United States and internationally. Continuously published since 1935, this is an essential tool for Latin American Studies. Also available online (see above) from the Library of Congress.

Hispanic American Periodicals Index (Gorgas Reference Z1605 .H49) UCLA Latin American Center Publications, University of California, Los Angeles,1974—indexes, from 1970- , more than 400 scholarly journals devoted to Latin American topics, with an especially strong subject coverage.

International Historical Statistics, the Americas, 1750-1993, 4th ed. (HA175 .M55 1998x)—reference resource for historical statistics for North, Central and South America.

Latin America: a Guide to the Historical Literature (Gorgas Reference Z1601 .G7)—annotated bibliography of historical works on Latin America. Contains English language, as well as other language entries. Published in 1971, this bibliography is somewhat dated but still useful for earlier works.

Latin American Writers (Gorgas Reference PQ7081 .A1 L37 1989)—biographical and other information on Latin American writers from Colonial period to present. Covers various literary genres—poetry, literature, theater, essays, etc.

Political Systems of the World (Gorgas Reference JA81 .D47 1989x)—includes social and economic data on various countries and their political systems. Contains information on subjects such as political history, political parties, and elections.

Spanish American Authors: the Twentieth Century (Gorgas Reference PQ7081.3 F57)—biographical information on authors from the Caribbean, Central, and South America, partially written by the authors themselves.

Statistical Abstract of Latin America (HA935 .S8—locations vary; search in the libraries catalog using Statistical Abstract of Latin America as title)—the best starting point for national level data covering hundreds of different topics. Annual thematic coverage varies, and is reflective of a country’s data collection cycle.

World Bibliographical Series (call numbers vary; search in the libraries catalog using World Biographical Series as title; series is located in the reference stacks)—annotated bibliographical series with a volume for Mexico and each South American and Caribbean nation. Compiled by authorities in respective fields, each volume contains topics such as history, politics, religion, language, visual arts, etc.

Latin American Studies Association (LASA) [http://lasa.international.pitt.edu/]—the largest Latin American professional association in the world. LASA brings together experts on Latin America from all disciplines.

Latin American Studies Southeast Region (LASER) [http://www.tulane.edu/~latinlib/laser.html]—“a consortium of large academic libraries in the Southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico devoted to the cooperative collecting of research materials on Latin America and the Caribbean.”
