SUBJECT DATABASES

MLA (MLA International Bibliography) Produced by the Modern Language Association of America, consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore, and includes coverage from 1963 to the present. Provides access to scholarly research in over 3,000 journals and series, and covers books, book chapters, working papers, conference proceedings, bibliographies, and other formats.

Literature Resource Center (LRC) The Literature Resource Center provides access to biographies, bibliographies, and critical analysis of authors from every age and literary discipline. The LRC covers more than 90,000 novelists, poets, essayists, journalists, and other writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,000 of the most-studied authors. Search by author name, title, genre, literary movement, or literary themes. LRC contains the following: Contemporary Authors, Scribner Writers Series, and Twayne's Author Series as well as full text journal articles. FT

Literature Online (LION) A fully searchable library of more than 330,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, plus biographies, bibliographies, and key criticism and reference resources. This resource contains the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (1920-present) among other sources.FT

LLBA (Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts) LLBA provides abstracts of articles from approximately 2,000 serials published worldwide, coverage of recent books, enhanced dissertation listings, from Dissertation Abstracts International, and bibliographic citations for book reviews, that appear in journals abstracted for Sociological Abstracts.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index (also listed as Web of Science) Online version of the print versions of: Arts & Humanities Citation Index; Science Citation Index; and Social Sciences Citation Index.

GENERAL DATABASES

All three of these databases are broad, multi-disciplinary resources that contain some scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles as well as more popular magazine coverage. Some articles are full-text and some are not.

E-JOURNALS

To determine whether a particular journal is available as an e-journal, go to the Libraries e-journal page and type in the title of the journal. JSTOR and Project Muse are but two of the e-journal sources.

JSTOR Full text images of over 100 scholarly titles in a range of subject areas, including language and literature, philosophy, African American studies, and classical studies. Search the archive or pull up a specific article. Coverage: Varies by journal title but there is significant historical coverage. Most journals are included from volume 1; coverage runs up until the most recent three or five years, depending on the journal. Issues from the past three to five years are not included (see Project Muse below). FT

Project Muse provides access to journals published by the Johns Hopkins University Press (and others). Disciplines covered are humanities, social sciences, and mathematics including language, literature, women's studies, and philosophy. FT

PRIMARY RESOURCES --DATABASES

Literature Online (see description above) FT

Nineteenth Century Masterfile is an index to nineteenth century literature. Contains the noted indexes: Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, New York Times Index, Palmers Index to The Times, Harper's Magazine Index, Descriptive Catalogue of the Government Publications, and others. FT

Accessible Archives contains primary source material from 18th and 19th century periodicals. Databases include: Godey's Lady's Book; The Pennsylvania Gazette 1728-1800; The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective; African American Newspapers: the 19th century; The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: Delaware County (1819-1870); The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County; and American Counties to 1900. North American Women's Letters and Diaries is a large, thoroughly indexed collection of women's diaries and correspondence covering the time period of Colonial times through 1950. FT

Early English Books Online contains over 125,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue, Wing's Short-Title Catalogue, and the Thomason Tracts. Many titles are available in full-text PDF format. Searches citations of Early English texts from 1475 to 1700.

Evan's Digital Edition is based on the renowned American Bibliography by Charles Evans and enhanced by Roger Bristol's Supplement to Evans' American Bibliography. This database provides important primary resources for research on many aspects of 17th and 18th century American life (covers 1639-1800). Upon completion, Evans Digital will consist of over 36,000 works and 2,400,000 images.

REFERENCE DATABASES

OED Online contains the complete text of the 20-volume Second Edition, first published in 1989,together with its 3-volume Additions Series, published in 1993 (volumes 1 and 2) and 1997 volume 3). Every quarter, a range of new and revised entries from the OED's revision program are added to OED Online as part of the growing New Edition. FT

Worldcat Union catalog containing bibliographic information on 40+ million items (books, scores, films, maps, archival materials, and other formats) held in thousands of academic, public, and other libraries around the world. Broad in scope with records dating to the 12th century. Can be used to verify citations, locate an item in another library, or to provide accurate citation information for interlibrary loan requests. (Does not include citations to individual articles, stories in periodicals, or book chapters).
