Custom ClassesWe prefer to work with the instructor to develop a meaningful instruction session at point of need (around the time that you've given an assignment). Through many years of professional experience and research, we've found that this type of experience is the most effective for helping students learn to use the library. If you would like to work with a librarian to design a class that is tailored to a specific subject or assignment, please contact your subject specialist or if you are unsure of whom to contact, call Brett Spencer at (205) 348-1200. We encourage you to contact the librarian ten days to two weeks before giving the assignment.
Teaching Classes Yourself
Naturally, the librarians in Gorgas want to teach your class, but you may also bring your class to the library and teach them on your own. If you choose to do so, please follow our guidelines and notify Brett Spencer at 348-1200 five days in advance so that we can inform you if another class will already be using the Information Center. A quick call can save you (and us) a lot of time and frustration! Please be aware of our policies during peak times as well. And if you plan to have your students complete a library assignment, please consult with the specialist for your subject area. That way, we will be able to keep track of the needed resources, as well as provide quality assistance.
