This web page lists resources for students enrolled in CTD 446. The resources listed below will help you accomplish the following for your group project and presentation:
- Research the culture(s) of the countries and/or regions you have chosen
- Get specific information about costume and clothing of that culture
- Obtain information on the company you are researching for your price points
- Research the market for apparel in the country where you hope to promote
- Learn about doing business in another country

CULTURES OF OTHER COUNTRIES
Electronic Resources
This annual publication of the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States with almanac-style information about the countries of the world. The Factbook provides a two- to three-page summary of the demographics, geography, communications, government, economy, and military about various nations.
Country Background Notes, published by the U.S. State Department, include facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations of many nations. The Background Notes are updated/revised as they are received from the State Department's regional bureaus.
For countries that have diverse ethnic groups (India, Turkey, China, etc.) it may be helpful to consult the eHRAF (Human Relations Area Files). Use the "Browse" tab and browse countries by culture to see if there is any information that is useful.

This resource contains articles describing the ways of life for over 400 culture group worldwide. Articles include information on folklore, religion, interpersonal relations, family life, clothing, education and more. A country index is located at the front of Volume 1.
Countries and Their Cultures Gorgas Reference GN307.C68 2001 4 volumes
Arranged alphabetically by country, this resource describes both the countries and their cultures. Entries include information on social classes; gender roles and statuses; marriage, family, and kinship; etiquette; religion; and more.

Search stratregy:
Type in the name of the country you are researching in one search box. In another search box, type in the word "costume". You can also try the words, "clothing," "apparel," or "fashion" but "costume" is your best bet.

Doing Business in Another Country
Country Commercial Guides (CCG) are reports, prepared by United States Commercial Service offices around the world, which provide comprehensive commercial information for U.S. companies looking to do business in a specific country. Locate CCG within the database STAT-USA, in the Trade Data Bank (NTDB)
To access CCG:
- Go to the STAT-USA database
- Click on the Globus & NTDB link
- Under "Market and Country Research" click on "Country Commercial Guides"
CONSUMER MARKETS FOR APPAREL
Global Market Information Database (GMID)
Use GMID to find information about consumer markets for clothing and footwear (and other goods) in various countries.
Search Strategy:
Under "Search industries," select "Consumer Markets"
Select "Clothing and Footwear"
Under the Geographic selection, expand to see a list of countries and choose your country.
