How To Search
Story Finder

Story Finder provides thousands of full-text short stories plus explanations, biographies, pictures and more. The database will be updated constantly with classic and contemporary stories. Many texts are available online! Texts of stories with references can be located by looking for the referenced anthology in the Libraries’ Catalog. In Story Finder you can search for stories by title or author. You can even find stories if you only remember a few words from the stories’ lyrics.

Getting Started

Click "Story Finder" on the Libraries’ databases list.

Searching

Basic Search: Simply enter any word(s), phrase, author, or title in the search window and click on "Go." Basic Search looks for all of the terms and then ranks the results by relevance. Poems that most closely match your search terms will appear at the top. Enter exact titles or phrases in quotation marks.

Stories with online full-texts will have a "T" next to their titles.

Advanced Search: Type in a word(s) or phrase in each Search for: box. Connect the keywords by filling in AND, OR, BUT NOT. You can limit your search to a specific part of a poem by selecting from the drop down menu in each Search in: box. For example, you can search all the authors for "Frost". Or, you can search all the poem titles for "road" .

Genre Navigator: Allows you to browse stories on a particular subject such as Religion, People, Nature, History and others. Click on a particular icon and then scroll down to browse subdivisions.

What if the text of a story is not available online?

Search for the anthology that contains the poem in the Libraries Catalog:

>Minimize Story Finder
>Enter the Libraries’ Catalog (
http://library.ua.edu/)
>Click "Basic Search"
>Type in the title of the anthology.
>Highlight "Title" in the "Find Results in:" menu.
>Click "Search"
>Write down the call number and location of the anthology if the Library owns it. (Be sure to write down the page numbers from Story Finder!)

Printing

You can format a poem for printing by clicking "Print Text Only" at the top of the story (usually near the author’s picture). Once formatted, click "print" on your browser bar.
