How To Search
JStor
(Journal Storage)

JStor contains article texts from the full-runs of core journals in African-American Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance, History, Literature, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Population Studies, Sociology, and Statistics. JStor is one of the few databases to offer the texts of articles published before 1980. Searching JStor is recommended if you have unique keywords or phrases in mind, or if a particular author or journal is being sought.

Getting Started

> Select "J-Store" from the Libraries databases list.
> Click "Search "
> To begin searching, checkmark one of the collections of journals that are listed on the bottom of the search page.

Basic Searching

> Jstor allows you to use keywords to search the collection. Type in one keyword or phrase in each line. You may combine keywords using the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NEAR. When you connect keywords with AND in a full text search, you find all instances in which both keywords appear in the same article. Connecting keywords with OR allows you to find all articles that contain wither keyword. Connect keywords with NEAR for those instances when the keywords occur within 10 words (a typical sentence) or 25 words (paragraph) of each other.

> Jstor allows you to search for the singular and plural forms of words at the same time, by adding a "+" to the end of the singular form.
Example: Cat+ = cat or cats
knife+ = knife or knives

Stemming and truncation are not currently implemented with the exception of plurals. You must use the OR. Example: Region OR regional.

> When searching for an author just use the first and last name and it will find article citations with middle names or initials also.

> You can search in the entire contents or you can limit your search by date or by journal or journal type.

> You can also limit searches to articles, reviews, opinion pieces, or other items by scrolling down the Basic Search screen and selecting from the menu.

> When using the advanced search form, all search words must be enclosed in quotation marks, whether they are single words or phrases. Ex. "liberty" and "Patrick Henry"
