The Warner map Collection includes
fine examples of 16th-, 17th-, and 18th-century
cartography.
The earliest of these is a 1585 Ortelius map of the world that clearly
outlines the
southeastern
portion of what is now the United States. The Warner Map Collection
was
a gift to the University of Alabama from the estate of Mildred Westervelt
Warner (1893-1974).
The University of Alabama is pleased
to be able to showcase the Warner Map Collection, which
is housed in the W.S.
Hoole Special Collections Library on the campus in Tuscaloosa.
Each page in this exhibit includes the
map's call number and other catalog data as well as
a link to a high-resolution
image (where available) on
the Alabama
Maps web site.
Alabama Maps is an ongoing project of the Cartographic
Research
Laboratory, which operates
under the auspices of the College of Arts
and Sciences at the University of Alabama.
