American Library Association/NextBook Grant

University Libraries has been awarded a $1500 grant from the American Library Association/NextBook under the “Let’s Talk About It: Jewish Literature” program.

Recipients of this grant are asked to identify a scholar to lead five discussion sessions in the spring of 2005; each session on a book identified by ALA under a particular theme. The theme chosen by the Libraries and their partners is "A Mind of Her Own: Fathers and Daughters in a Changing World", and the final book to be discussed is "Bee Season", which will be scheduled to coincide with the showing of the film of the same name during the Tuscaloosa Jewish Film Festival.

The Libraries’ partners are the Tuscaloosa Public Library, Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, and the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa. In addition, several book groups and the School of Library and Information Studies have expressed strong interest. The scholar chosen to lead the book discussion sessions is Dr. Steven Jacobs, UA Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Aaron Aronov Chair of Judaic Studies, and Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in Tuscaloosa.

Marcia Barrett, associate professor in the Libraries, is the project director for this grant.

University Libraries Awarded IMLS Grant

University Libraries has been awarded $449,201 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the program: 2004 Recruiting and Educating Librarians for the 21st Century

The University Libraries, partnering with the School of Information Studies, will recruit 10 students from differing backgrounds and cultures who have completed a graduate degree in a subject other than library science to study academic or research librarianship. Practical training and classroom theory will be combined with a mentoring experience to prepare them for careers such as university library faculty.
